About
A ministry of presence, advocacy, and compassionate support.
Anodyne Companion & Advocacy Services (ACAS) was founded on the deep conviction that no one should have to walk through medical, emotional, or end-of-life experiences alone.
We provide non-medical companion support, patient advocacy, and faith-centered emotional care for individuals and families navigating vulnerable moments in life. Our role is not to replace medical care, but to support the human experience within it, bringing calm presence, clarity, and compassion into spaces that often feel overwhelming and isolating.
We walk alongside clients during hospital visits, medical appointments, recovery, chronic illness journeys, and end-of-life transitions.
We are not here to replace care. We are here to bring presence into it.
If you or a loved one is facing a medical journey, transition, or moment of uncertainty, we are here to walk alongside you.
Our Story
-
For over a decade, our founder, Chenae, has lived at the intersection of healthcare systems and human connection. As a healthcare educator within a large healthcare organization, she spent years training providers, nurses, and technicians on the electronic health record (EHR) systems that support patient care. While her work was rooted in technology and process, her true understanding of care was shaped far beyond the classroom.
It was shaped at home.
-
In 2019, Chenae’s mother was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, which later metastasized to the brain, leading to significant cognitive decline. As a single mother of three and the primary provider for her household, Chenae stepped into an unexpected role, full-time caregiver for a disabled parent.
Though not a clinician, she quickly learned to navigate complex aspects of care, including surgical dressings, PICC line support, medication coordination, and interpreting medical information across multiple specialties. More importantly, she became her mother’s advocate, ensuring she was seen, heard, and treated with dignity throughout her care journey.
Over years of chemotherapy treatments, hospital visits, and specialist appointments, Chenae experienced firsthand the emotional, physical, and mental toll caregiving carries. She also witnessed the gaps in the healthcare system that leave families feeling overwhelmed and alone. Yet through it all, she considered it a profound privilege to care for her mother.
-
In 2021, a childhood friend reached out for help. Her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was undergoing treatment in California while the rest of her family lived out of state.
Chenae stepped in as a trusted advocate, attending oncology appointments, asking critical questions, taking notes, and ensuring the family remained informed and connected throughout the process.
In January 2022, that role deepened in a new and unexpected way when her brother was hospitalized following multiple strokes. Listed as his emergency contact, she was suddenly responsible for coordinating his care remotely during COVID-19 restrictions.
When she was finally able to advocate in person, her brother expressed severe pain that had previously been dismissed. Trusting her instincts, she reviewed his electronic health record and identified findings that suggested fluid buildup in his lungs. After confirming with clinical staff, she advocated for further evaluation.
Her persistence led to immediate intervention, resulting in the removal of three liters of fluid from his lungs and a complete relief of his pain.
Later, a physician told her brother, “You are one of the lucky ones. It’s not often that someone has an advocate like this by their side.”
-
It was through these deeply personal experiences that God gave Chenae the vision for Anodyne Companion & Advocacy Services.
ACAS is the culmination of lived experience, professional insight, and a calling to serve others in their most vulnerable moments.
-
The healthcare system can feel fast, complex, and emotionally overwhelming. Patients are often asked to absorb life-changing information while navigating fear, stress, and uncertainty. Families are stretched thin. Many people find themselves sitting in waiting rooms, infusion chairs, or hospital beds without the emotional or informational support they need.
No one should have to walk through those moments alone.
Anodyne Companion & Advocacy Services exists to bridge that gap.
An “anodyne” is something that relieves pain or distress, and that is exactly what we aim to provide. We walk alongside our clients so they feel supported, informed, and seen not as a case or condition, but as a whole person.
Core Principles
-
Healing begins with not being alone. Our presence is calm, steady, and compassionate during moments that often feel uncertain or overwhelming.
-
We help clients feel heard and understood in medical environments by supporting communication, clarity, preparation, and understanding.
-
When welcomed, we offer prayer, scripture, and spiritual encouragement to provide comfort, grounding, and peace during difficult experiences.
Our Approach
-
ACAS is a non-medical service. We do not provide medical treatment, nursing care, transportation, or clinical advice. Our role is strictly supportive, advocacy-based, and companion-focused.
-
We believe that presence is powerful.
In moments where everything feels uncertain, presence brings peace. In systems that often feel rushed or impersonal, presence restores dignity. In seasons of fear or transition, presence reminds people they are not alone.
ACAS exists to slow those moments down, bring clarity where there is confusion, and offer compassion where there is fear.
